Review/recenzija: E.K.Johnston: A Thousand Nights/ Tisuu noi

A Thousand Nights. A novel by E.K.Johnston, as magical as it is unexpected. Intrigued by its covers, I couldn't wait to read this beauty, and now I can only say thank god I did! For those who will enjoy this book as much as I did, its sequel, Spindle, was published earlier this year, so go on and find it too.
After those few words of praise, nothing's stopping me anymore from moving on and giving you all the reasons why you should read this book as soon as possible.

This is a story of a girl who sacrificed herself to the powerful but merciless king to save her sister and many other young girls from her village.
Lo-Melkhiin marries young girls, takes them to his court and then he kills them. Nobody knows why and everybody's afraid to ask for his reasons. Before he came to the village of our storyteller, he has already killed more than 300 girls.
So to save his sister, our storyteller puts on the pretties clothes and puts herself in forint of him, daring him to choose her.
So he does.
Now, she finds herself in his court, surrounded by all the beautiful things he possesses, and those she will never be able to use.
She dies tomorrow.
Except, she doesn't. Not even the night after that. And soon she gets to understand why.

I don't often have the opportunity to read novels whose characters are connected with the nature in such a fundamental level. They believe their gods are made by people, and the more people believe in them, the powerful they get. After her confrontation with Lo-Melkhiin, our storyteller feels her body being able to produce some kind of power that she accepts as the part of her new self, as those powers are the results of her people's prayers. To me it was a bit strange how a woman would be able to take so calmly the fact that she's starting to grow powers out of nowhere, but considering the customs of her people and her upbringing it becomes clear that she is highly spiritual. She sees the changes as gifts she is due to accept and use against the dark magic that threatens the world.
Why don't we, just as the storyteller did, instead of paying too much attention to unnecessary distractors, turn our heads towards things that really matter and use the skills that we have to do good and make a real difference?
Why don't we, instead of finding darkness in everything, look for the light in every one of us?

Not only does this novel show us how accepting ourselves and showing consideration with others can make us win even against the most powerful oponent, but it's also special in some other ways. For example, only Lo-Melkhiin and a few of his most important servents have names. We don't know the name of our storyteller, her family, her village or even the countrey she lives in. We know her world isn't our world, but that is practicaly the only information the author gives us. There are some other interesting questions that never get answered but I will not reveal those, well, because spoilers. Besides, there's still that Spindle book that awaits us. That's probably where we should go and ask them.

Until we do that, return here and leave a bunch of comments, lots of love form

On eni mlade djevojke i odvodi ih u svoj dvorac.
I ono sljedee.

Tisuu noi ni jedan lik osim Lo-Melkhiina i nekih njegovih mukih podanika nema imena.
Svakako ju proitajte ak i ako niste deklarirani ljubitelj fantastike. Nudi zaista divne poruke o kojima je vrijedno promisliti.
Tisuu noi upoznat e vas s jednom drugaijom kulturom i otvoriti vam vrata u jedan novi i nepoznati svijet pustinje i vruine.

Toplo ju preporuujem.
