Review/recenzija: Naomi Novik: Uprooted/Iskorijenjena

There are some serious opinions shared by so many bloggers about this book. Seems like Uprooted, a fantasy novel by NaomiNovik has its lovers everywhere, but there are also those who don't share those warm feelings. I was having a nice weekend with this one, so I'll just state what I think about this book. Then I'll let you decide.

Agnieszka lives in a valley in a quiet small village, but near the corrupted Wood. The Wood is full of malevolent power, and the only reason it hasn't already swallowed them all, lies in the power of Dragon.
Dragon is a wizard of great ability but also a cold and demanding man that likes to keep his distance from all the people he protects.
Every ten years, Dragon takes one girl form all of the villages he's protecting, puts her in his castle and keeps her there until it's time for new girl to be chosen.
Agnieszka thought that, this time, Dragon would take her best friend for she is the most beautiful girl around.
But she was mistaken. It's her that Dragon takes and now she's to be faced with the destiny that is more unexpected she could have ever been dreaming for.

This novel is one of the best fantasy books that I had the chance to read this year. It's a standalone, unique story with interesting and alluring characters. Their personalities made me turn page by page and be very attentive of every spell they performed because I couldn't even imagine what was it that awaited in the next chapter.

Now, some would say that Dragon is one of those characters who are cold, calculating and insensitive for no reason whatsoever. In another words, an asshole. I'd say he's one of those people who feel deep but have the problem with showing their emotions. So I think it's fine for people not to like apathetic characters, but it wouldn't be OK to claim he has no personality just because he doesn't show emotions. There are people that need our understanding more than others, and there are characters like that too.

More than just magic, fantasy and spells, this novel offers some universal themes like persistence and tenacity, understanding and courage.

I spent last Saturday and Sunday in my bed, under my blanket, with this novel, like Harry Potter in the beginning of the third movie, when he was trying to learn Lumos Maxim charm and I don't regret it. It will be Christmas soon, and if you are looking for a unique present for your special bookworm, I think that, with Uprooted, you can't go wrong.

Agnieka ivi u selu kraj ume.

Vaa Rose ??
